ABSTRACT MOTHER AND CHILD
I created this piece to exemplify my own joy at being a mother of three children. However, I find this to be a universal theme in art and art history that resonates not just and for mothers, but for all mankind. A mother represents our first love and first introduction in this world into a safe harbor, a nurturing home, a place of having our physical and emotional needs met. Motherhood is a bond, with one’s child, but also with all the mothers of today, as well as past generations and those to come. “Mother and Child” resonates in any language and any part of the world. It is one of our most enduring and strong bonds in life and our most universally common connection to other women. There is a deep respect and hallowed place associated with the mother and child subject, reflective of our compassion for this universal bond. I chose to represent this subject abstractly in order to enhance and “play” with the curves and sensuous forms. Historically, wide hips have often represented in various cultures, fertility. The womb is considered sacred by many cultures and tribes, as it should, and valued as its source of giving new life.
