I strive to respect the honesty of materials I am working with and adhere to a purity of intent in their creation. The sensuousness of the material, especially in outlining the soft, sensuous curves of the feminine form, is what I enjoy most about working in marble. Natural shapes, such as those found in mountains, also contribute to the vision of the stone work. The size of the block of marble initially offers both restraints and possibilities. Veining, fractures, soft or hardness of the stone also come into consideration. The choice of which tools to use, and where, are important, as well as the amount of force or delicate touch with each removal or refinement. Initially the block of stone is opaque, showing faint hint of the beauty hidden within. The discovery through chiseling, grinder work, sanding, and polishing reveal the intensity and beauty of the colors, the veining patterns. The stone will suggest a curve, a plane, a rough texture, or a smoothly honed or highly polished surface in areas. It is like opening presents…a surprise awaits as it unfolds.
