Every child naturally loves to play; it is in their DNA. As adults we often lose this instinctive quality. To play has a freedom of expression, a joy, a free flowing rhythm…it is not scripted or rehearsed, or even learned. Children possess a natural curiosity that is often lost in adulthood.

Sometimes when I begin to sculpt, I will allow myself to play…with form, with space, letting the material suggest where to go next, what to add or to remove…all with no intended outcome in mind. As a shape begins to form it might be completely abstract, or it might take on elements that suggest a human form. As a work of art, it must remain balanced and retain certain qualities of good composition and design, but the piece can hopefully retain that sense of joy of exploration, of pure play.
