RIVER HOUSE

A sanctuary, to me, is a place for renewal, both physical and spiritual, mental and emotional. Our house on the river is just that—a sanctuary—where the connection is to nature, the outdoors, the various seasons, and the weather. To hear the rain on a tin roof at night, or to watch a sunset after an active day on the water, is deeply moving. Stillness and solitude are balanced with times of activity, connectedness with family and friends, and sports (hiking and water skiing.) In our world of modern conveniences, including their constant intrusions, this is a place of welcome respite, free of such distractions—no tv, no internet—instead there are books, board games, puzzles, conversations. The early morning wake up birdsong, the whippoorwill with his evening call, the bald eagle hunting its prey, the new born fawn learning to drink beside his mother, the turtles sunning on the log—these are all aspects of the natural beauty surrounding this retreat. A sanctuary is a place where the world feels far away; where one feels close to nature; where a summer storm is the entertainment and star gazing on the dock is the featured film.
